Lehrinhalt

Overview about the role of protected areas for balancing wildlife management and conservation with other concerns in Central Europe. Within this context, the following issues will be presented and discussed: protected area categories, legal frameworks such as Natura 2000, transboundary protected areas, regional-scale green infrastructure, financing opportunities including LIFE and INTERREG, reintroduction efforts, ecosystem functions including wildlife movement corridors, ecosystem services including recreation, cultural landscapes, ecotourism and visitor management, and stakeholder coordination.

Lehrziel

Students will understand the goals and constraints for protected areas in Central Europe as they pertain to wildlife management. They will also understand how these goals interact with other concerns held by stakeholders working in the region, and how management can address these concerns.

Students will learn about examples where such concerns have been addressed and the approaches that were used to overcome them. They will also understand the conditions for transferring and adapting these existing approaches to new contexts for managing and conserving wildlife in and around protected areas.
