Lehrinhalt

Nanotechnology is one of the "hot topics" of our time. News reports and public opinions range from hype to hysteria about safety concerns.

In this course we will address a wide range of questions and issues concerned with nanomaterials including their technological and biomedical potential (e.g. battery materials for e-mobility, metal oxides for cosmetics, or fluorescent markers for cell imaging and cancer detection) and the possible impact on cells, organisms and the environment.

• Nanomaterial definitions: natural / incidential vs. man-made (engineered) nanomaterials; differences of nanomaterials vs. bulk materials; Nanomaterials used today
• Investigating on the nano scale: Methods and technologies for characterization of ENMs (from scattering to spectroscopic methods); Synthesis and manufacturing of ENMs; Fabrication and Functionalization
• Nano risk assessment: Nanotoxicity – a valid term?; Nano risk assessment on selected case studies; Hazard potentials and possible effects of nanomaterials on living systems; Introduction into in vitro cell culture techniques including microfluidic technquies and in vivo animal models for nano risk assessment; Exposure assessment and modeling, etc..

Inhaltliche Voraussetzungen (erwartete Kenntnisse)

Basic knowledge in food technology, biotechnology and environmental sciences

Lehrziel

After completing the course the students …
- Can describe the special characteristics of nanomaterials.
- Knowledgeable in most relevant methods for nanomaterial fabrication and characterization.
- can present the critical aspects of risk assessment nanomaterials.
- name examples in current efforts and strategies and are able to critically assess the ongoing developments.
