Lehrinhalt

The aim of the course is to promote an understanding of what makes a ‘good’ presentation, and translate this understanding into the individual presentations to be held by the participants, e.g. at the ELLS Scientific Student Conference or the CAS-Semester-Touchdown. We will critically reflect on why certain practices may be helpful or distracting during presentations, as well as understanding the need to find one’s personal style.

Students will learn how to present their ideas in an accessible and convincing way. Such skills are useful not only to present the results of scientific research, but also in professional practice or job applications.

The participants will benefit from intensive interactions with other participants and with lecturers, as well from the rapid feedback tailored to their presentation. Grading will be based on the active participation in the course, as well as on the quality of the feedback you provide to others. You will find additional information in the Syllabus (which you can download once you registered for the course).

To ensure a high output, participants are required to have a first draft of their presentation ready before the course starts.

Classes will be split between those preparing for an oral presentation and those preparing for a poster presentation. Please register for EITHER the 'poster presentation' group OR the 'oral presentation' group, depending on the presentation you will be working on (you are free to attend both groups, but your grade will depend on your work in one group).

For the Poster group to take place, there need to be at least 5 participants (since we learn from each other, there need to be a min. number of posters to discuss!).

Inhaltliche Voraussetzungen (erwartete Kenntnisse)

You should know how to work with MS PowerPoint (or similar presentation software). A basic understanding of communication principles is helpful.
