Lehrinhalt

The course offers an important and comprehensive knowledge to study cellulosic fibers with focus on their structure, morphology and identification. The course provides a comparative review of cellulose fibers from a unique perspective that explores fibers' structure and morphology facilitating deeper understanding of these fibrous materials. The fiber identification methods are briefly overviewed with the focus on the microscopy and preferred microscopy tools which are carefully selected to illustrate concepts necessary in understanding textile (but also pulp and paper) fiber microstructure and morphology. Special stains and reagents for identification of textile, pulp and paper fibers are discussed. Also, the course covers "historic fibers" main characteristics and how microscopy makes identification of fiber artifacts possible. The usage of microscopic techniques to analyze swelling and dissolution of cellulosic fibers is also covered. Contemporary issues of environmentally friendly practices in fiber production are also reviewed.

The lectures are paired with laboratory practices to acquire skills and experience necessary to study the structure and morphology of natural and man-made cellulosic fibers and identify them by microscopy.

Inhaltliche Voraussetzungen (erwartete Kenntnisse)

The course has been designed to provide theoretical and practical knowledge about fiber science and optical microscopy with a focus on the fine and microstructure of natural and man-made cellulose fibers, as well as the necessary knowledge and skills for cellulose fiber identification.

Lehrziel

The students will obtain a general understanding of the fiber science and microscopic techniques utilized in examinations of cellulose fiber microstructure and morphology. By accomplishing the course students acquire theoretical and practical knowledge to describe the structure and morphology of cellulosic fibers, recognize differences and common features of natural and man-made cellulose fibers, analyze swelling and dissolution of cellulosic fibers by microscopic techniques, and analyze the potential of cellulosic fibers in relation to sustainability and green chemistry.
