Lehrinhalt

This lecture course will address the needs of both newcomers and people who have at least some experience in writing articles in the area of life sciences. A strong emphasis will be given on ethical issues in publishing scientific work.

A mandatory online briefing will precede the actual course, and a manuscript (that can be read by a broad spectrum of scientists) is handed out to the students to read as their first assignment. The manuscript is missing the Abstract and the last paragraph of the Introduction.

The actual online workshop will consist of three blocks of about 4 hours each during the scope of two weeks. In each block the lecturers will kick off with introductory lectures, followed by (supervised) group work of the students. Tools will be given to the students to compile the missing parts of the manuscript, which then will be discussed in detail during the first two days of the course. This exercise requires a lot of interaction and discussion and the students will sort out how the various bits of data support hypotheses work and can be used to identify objectives and significance. The final day of the course will focus on ethical aspects in writing, reviewing and even publishing manuscripts.

The workshop will be held by researchers with a vast experience in publishing. Distinguished Professor John F. Leslie (Kansas State University) served as editor-in-chief of Applied and Environmental Microbiology for 10 years and has been given lectures on scientific publishing in the US, Europe and Asia ever since. Prof. Rudolf Krska is the president of the Austrian Society of Analytical Chemistry, member of the editorial board of multiple scientific journals and (co-)author of more than 400 SCI ranked papers. Assoc. Prof. Franz Berthiller is the chair of the Austrian Society of Toxicology, (co-)author of more than 160 SCI ranked papers and the editor-in-chief of the World Mycotoxin Journal.

Lehrziel

During an interactive lecture course, answers and solutions will be provided to e.g.the following questions:
What scientific message do I want to convey?
What question did I ask in my studies?
What was my answer and how can that be properly presented?
What is the right format for my message?
Who should be an author on my paper?
What should go in a given paper and what not?
