Lehrinhalt

In this class, we will explore the chemical processes that control the behavior of contaminants in the environment with a primary focus on the chemical speciation of inorganic contaminants in water. Chemical speciation is the distribution of chemicals among their various chemical forms, which ultimately determines their bioavailability, toxicity and mobility in the environment. Chemical processes that control the chemical speciation of contaminants in the environment include acid-base chemistry, redox and complexation reactions in solution, as well as dissolution, precipitation and sorption processes involving solids. After an introduction to the concepts behind chemical speciation, students will apply their theoretical knowledge to the solution of real-world problems based on mathematical calculations (hand-calculations and Excel), graphical methods, and the use of a computer-based modeling tool (Visual MINTEQ). At the end of the course, students will apply their new knowledge in a modeling project, and present their results to a small audience of external judges in PowerPoint presentations.

Inhaltliche Voraussetzungen (erwartete Kenntnisse)

Basic knowledge of general chemistry

Lehrziel

At the successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

1. Recognize the relationships between atmosphere, soil/sediments and natural waters.
2. Understand the importance of chemical speciation for environmental engineering problems.
3. Use a range of methods (mathematical, graphical and computer-based simulations) to
predict the chemical speciation in natural and engineered systems.
4. Understand the advantages and limitations of chemical modeling.
5. Have a general overview of key environmental properties and processes in natural systems
at environmentally relevant conditions.
6. Understand the basic structure of soils and minerals, and the various processes of
contaminant sorption onto environmental surfaces.
7. Improve their scientific writing and presentation skills.
8. Practice team work
