Lehrinhalt

Principles, scope, contents and field applications of soil erosion and sediment delivery. Basic knowledge of catchment morphometry. Highlights of the drainage basin (general concepts, physical contouring, digital interpretation of orography, catchment division in morphological units). Monitoring soil erosion and sedimentation by experimental sites.
Hillslope and catchment erosion. Main factors influencing water erosion. Main erosion processes and physical forms. Source and evolution of prediction models. The Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE). The sediment delivery ratio. Distributed approaches to predict the sediment yield.
The Sediment delivery problem. The use of recent techniques based on radiotracers to estimate net erosion and deposition at hillslope and catchment scale.

Exercises:
Calculations of modelling parameters using measured data. Examples of predicting soil erosion at hillslope scale.

Lehrziel

After completing the course students should be able to:
•acquire the basic methodologies and technologies to individuate the main agents and atmospheric phenomena causing water erosion;
•acquire the basic methodologies aimed at planning and managing watersheds using an integrated approach;
•acquire knowledge on:
theoretical and practical methods for analysis of hydrological processes responsible for soil loss and hydrogeological disasters in urban and rural areas;
solution of the most relevant problems concerning control and mitigation of hydrogeological risks.
