Lehrinhalt

Based on courses in analytical chemistry, modern methods of analytical chemistry will be presented and discussed. The focus lies on the analytical techniques in laboratories of the Institute of analytical chemistry, namely elemental mass spectrometric methods (ICP-MS) and separation methods coupled to molecular mass spectrometry (GC-MS, LC-MS). Additional contents tackle the topics of cleanroom work, sample preparation, automation and data evaluation. The theoretical part of the course will cover all topics.
The laboratories are visited to meet the instruments, and the students themselves will apply the techniques presented during the lectures in a 24 h practical exercise. We encourage students to take this course as a teaser to understand the working workflows of the herein presented techniques, and to deepen on one of them in the 771318 course.
* Metrology, data acquisition, processing and identity confirmation strategies in analytical chemistry.
* Hyphenated separation technologies I: LC-MS and mobility separations.
* Hyphenated separation technologies II: GC-MS.
* Microfluidics I: Automation and sample preparation.
* Microfluidics II: Separations.
* Contamination control.
* Elemental mass spectrometry I: Principles.
* Elemental mass spectrometry II: Analysis of isotope ratios using multicollector ICP-MS.

Inhaltliche Voraussetzungen (erwartete Kenntnisse)

Bachelor knowledge in chemistry and analytical chemistry. Basic use of MS Office software for scientific uses: word processor, equation editor, excel for data treatment, basic calculations and cell operations, plots. Basic use of power point.

Lehrziel

After completion of the course the students will be able to:
* Describe the principles of ICP-MS, LC-MS and GC-MS.
* Perform in an analytically clean environment.
* Review scientific literature on separation technologies and mass spectrometry
* solate from the literature the critical information for their own method development.
* Check the correctness of their results based on the instrumental knowledge.
* Select the most suited analytical workflow to answer an analytical question.
* Develope their custom workflows for determining different analytes in different matrices.
* To present and justify their results in an accessible, structured and analytically standardized manner (formulas, units, plots, statistics).
