Lehrinhalt

Lectures:
• Theory in organic carbon cycling and GHG emission of aquatic ecosystems
• Theory to the methods learned in the course, such as, e.g., activitiy of extra-cellular enzymes, DOM composition analyses, microbial abundances and eco-physiological profiles

Laboratory techniques:
* Microbial respiration via CO2 production with microresp chambers and CO2 sensors
* Determination of organic carbon and dissolved organic matter properties
* Analyses of extra-cellular enzymatic activities, bacterial abundances, and ecophysiological profiling

Student project
* Development of experimental design
* Data analysis and preparation of report

Inhaltliche Voraussetzungen (erwartete Kenntnisse)

Limnochemistry and nutrient cycling or equivalent course
Basic knowledge in laboratory work

Lehrziel

After successful completion of this module, participants are able to:
•Discuss alterations of and linkages between carbon and inorganic nutrient cycles in aquatic ecosystems;
•Apply a wide range of methods to analyse biogeochemical and microbial functions and properties of different compartments of aquatic ecosystems, e.g., DOM spectroscopic properties, microbial respiration, microbial abundances, activity of extra-cellular enzymes
•Analyse carbon fluxes and their interaction in aquatic ecosystems including water and sediment compartments;
•Develop an experimental setting to investigate biogeochemical cycles
•Evaluate results of own measurements reflecting aquatic ecosystem properties.
