Lehrinhalt

Biophysics applies the concepts and methods of physics to study biological phenomena. Physical instrumentation, analysis, and theory are playing a growing role in biological (and biomedical) science.
Furthermore, biophysics overlaps with other scientific areas like biochemistry, cell biology, and molecular biology.

This (molecular) biophysics course provides an overview over basic physical concepts and models: physical magnitudes (measurement, dimensional and error analysis), mechanics, thermodynamics, electromagnetism, molecular forces, motility, molecules (and self-assembly), fluids, solids, and a brief introduction to experimental techniques (when examples from publications are shown).

The course will point out the importance of physics on biological (medical, and social) sciences and will start from the physics foundation acquired by students in their BOKU bachelor studies.

The mathematical tools necessary to understand the content of every lecture will be introduced.

Inhaltliche Voraussetzungen (erwartete Kenntnisse)

Special knowledge in biology or biochemistry is not required.
Some knowledge is physics, physical chemistry and mathematics will be an advantage.

Lehrziel

The aim of the course is to build the necessary knowledge to start tackle questions like how does biology and life science work from a physical point of view.
We will elucidate which physical concepts are helping us to explain/describe natural phenomena.

After the course the students will have understanding about biomolecular interactions, physico-chemical properties of soft matterials and how the phenomena involved can be investigated with physical tools.
