Lehrinhalt

This practical course will take place during one week at the Department for Applied Genetics and Cell Biology (Monday and Friday, Prof. Eva Stöger) and the Institute of Biotechnology in Plant Production (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Prof. Hermann Bürstmayr).

The part at Prof. Stögers lab will include
- Gene transfer methods using model and crop plants
- Use of a fluorescent marker protein for subcellular localisation
- Fluorescence microscopy
- Antibody extraction and purification from tobacco leaves

The part in Prof. Bürstmayrs lab covers basic technologies for marker-assisted selection and mutant screening:
- extraction of genomic DNA from plant tissues
- gelbased marker analysis using PCR generated microsattelite markers (SSR)
- gelfree marker analysis using the KASP SNP-detection system
- detection of mutations in candidate genes using TILLING

Inhaltliche Voraussetzungen (erwartete Kenntnisse)

Good general knowledge about classical and molecular genetics is needed. Knowledge in plant breeding or animal breeding is of advantage.
Attending the course 957325 Molecular plant breeding is highly recommended

Lehrziel

Developing a basic understanding of marker assisted selection and currect technologies involved in the analysis and interpretation of marker data.
