We will focus on biophysical and socioecological indicators, in particular material and energy flow accounts (MEFA), human appropriation of net primary production (HANPP), life cycle assessment (LCA), footprint family (ecological footprint etc.), and carbon accounting as implemented in the Kyoto protocol and the Paris agreement. Based on a common understanding of methods and indicators, we will conduct a critical discussion on which research question can be addressed by which method and which better not (strengths and weaknesses) as well as possible applications and interpretations of results at the example of case studies.
