Lehrinhalt

The lecture series provides an introduction to concepts, interactions, and methods used in modern nano and interface science in the full range of fields relevant to biologists and biotechnologists. The topics and knowledge provided in this course serve as an introduction to the more advanced, in-depth study provided in the Wahlfächer provided in the biomaterials, nanomaterials, colloids and interface are at the BOKU.
Nanoscience and nanotechnology is per definition an interdisciplinary field, spanning chemistry, physics, and biology, but with its foundation in physics. It is today applied to revolutionize aspects of the applied fields of medicine, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, therapy, and biomaterials. To provide a basis for entering and keeping up with the expected continued rapid development of the field(s) in the future, the course is focused on teaching the basic interactions and concepts of relevance for understanding materials and methods on the nanoscale. The model-based teaching will be supplemented with state-of-the-art methodology, experimental implementation, and applications in nanobiotechnology.

Inhaltliche Voraussetzungen (erwartete Kenntnisse)

Basic knowledge in mathematics, chemistry, physics and molecular biology.

Lehrziel

After the course the students will have an understanding of the physical and chemical principles guiding interactions on the nano- and mesoscales. They will know the current state-of-the-art and limits to engineering of the interface between man-made devices and biological systems based on this understanding. The students have acquired models and concepts guiding them to further life-long learning independent of specific methods in current use. They will also have acquired basic knowledge in characterization of the interaction of biological systems from the molecular level up to cells and tissues.
