Lehrinhalt

The course focuses on the principles and practical problems of qualitative research design and reflects on the potential of data, technologies, and approaches, considering triangulation and mixed-methods for social science researchers.

Research design and structure issues relate to:

* Theories and epistemological contexts of designing and doing qualitative research
* Guidelines for developing good practice in qualitative research: From research idea to problem statement, data collection and analysis, and ways to disseminate results
* Principles, practical problems and topics are presented and dicussed based on good research practice reflecting research questions from different disciplines.

In addition, the course introduces the concepts of triangulation and mixed-methods, with particular attention to the following subjects:

* Ethnographic methods and observation
* Interviews
* Focus groups
* Qualitative content analysis and application of QDA software
* Social network analysis

Lehrziel

In this course, students are expected to develop a coherent viewpoint on the challenges of designing and conducting qualitative research in the social sciences. Students will apply elementary empirical research methods, explore creative combinations of techniques, explore creative potentials, and critically consider the role of ethics.
