Lehrinhalt

Within the lecture basic knowledge of regenerative medicine and cell based therapies will be mediated.

List of subjects:
Stem cells: definition, embryonic and adult stem cells (SC), growth, differentiation/development, niches
sources, manipulation/modification and characterization of SC
Embryonic stem cells: blastocyst, induced pluripotent stem cells, nuclear transfer (including epigenetic, reprogramming); adult: transdifferentiation, gene therapy
Structure, organization and control of cells and tissues
Basics of Vascular Biology, Vasculogenesis, Angiogenesis, Lymphangiogenesis, Vascularization Strategies for Tissue Engineering

Immunological aspects, tolerance/rejection
Endogenous tissue regeneration/wound healing, strategies for reconstruction of specific tissues
Applications: SC in clinical applications e.g. hematopoietic SC therapy; Tissue Engineering of skin and bone

Biomaterials: classification, production, modification/functionalization
Extra cellular matrix ECM and other biological matrices (inclusive decellularized matrices)
Bioreactors for Tissue Engineering
Engineering aspects for stem cell expansion/cell based therapy product manufacturing
Biomechanical stimulation of SC, fluid dynamics and mechanotransduction
Stem cell therapies in animals (e.g. horse)

Inhaltliche Voraussetzungen (erwartete Kenntnisse)

Cell factories, Bioprocess Engineering, basic knowledge biochemistry, basic knowledge in cell biology and cell culture technology

Lehrziel

After successful completion of this lecture, students are able to explain the different fields within regenerative medicine and cell based therapies. They understand different concepts within regeneative medicine e.g. cell therapy and tissue engineering and are able to discuss ethical and technological issues when using e.g. stem cells. They can identify and evaluate limitations and risks with modern cell based theapies e.g. gene therapy.
