Lehrinhalt

Soils perform a variety of important functions. They are the habitat for plants and a large number of soil organisms. They also play an important role in carbon and nutrient cycling, climate and flood regulation and are important carbon stores. Based on recent research results we look at how forest and grassland management can change important soil processes and soil functions. The regional focus of this lecture is on temperate ecosystems.

Lehrziel

After completing this course students are familiar with the following topics:

- Knowledge of important soil functions
- Soil organic carbon storage as a key function of soil
- Natural and anthropogenic drivers of soil processes and functions in forests and grasslands
- Carbon and nutrient cycling in soils
- Concepts of carbon storage/ carbon stabilization in soils
- Release of greenhouse gases from soils
- The special role of peatlands for climate regulation
- Interaction of land use, biodiversity and other global change drivers
- Long-term monitoring networks for soils
