Lehrinhalt

Agricultural and food policies play a key role in making the agricultural and food system more sustainable and resilient. Understanding economic standpoints including institutional economics, and the evaluation of agricultural policies are important for (re-)designing or implementing new, comprehensive, and coherent policies. Knowledge about how to differentiate scientific (and objective) evaluations of policies from information that merely serves interest groups has become increasingly important. Both ex-ante and ex-post evaluations of agricultural policies allow for a scientific based assessment of the efficiency and effectiveness of agricultural policies and as such provide an important background information for all stakeholders involved in developing agricultural policies. In these courses, students will learn insights and make hands-on experiences in concepts, methods, and case studies in agricultural policies and policy evaluations. A particular focus is on Swiss and European agricultural policy.

Lehrziel

The learning outcomes of this course are:
1) Students acquire methodological knowledge in the context of agricultural policy evaluations (econometrics and modelling) via hands-on experiences and reflection of methodological challenges.
2) Students can critically assess the science-policy interface of policy evaluations and can understand potential future methodological developments in agricultural policy evaluations.
