This course/seminar will further explore the functioning of the earth system with a particular focus on the atmospheric and hydrological system. It builds on and integrates knowledge from the field of meteorology, hydrology, forestry and alpine hazard research by elaborating on specific examples in different fields of water research and how water resources are impacted by climate change. Examples and potential mitigation and adaptation strategies will be discussed.

After successfully completing this course/seminar students will be able to synthesis the interrelationships between large scale atmospheric-hydrological processes and the repercussions at the regional/local scales. They will be able to describe in-depth processes of the impacts of climate change on several components of the hydrological cycle and subsequent impacts to soil, vegetation and human systems (such as waste water treatment or drinking water quality supply). They will be able to assess the impact of climate aspects of river water management and sanitary environmental engineering. They will be able to discuss evidence-based explanations for climate change and develop mitigation and adaptation strategies. Students will be able to explain the relationships and interdependencies between the climate system and water resources. They will be able to explain the energy transfers between the systems. They can interpret the hard and soft facts of climate change. Students will be able to identify the connections between the climate drivers, the hydrological cycle and water resources. They will be able to discuss and bring in the various impacts that climate change can have on the water sector. They will gain competencies in sustainable management of water resources under non-stationary conditions. Students will be exposed to different impacts of climate change on the water cycle in different sectors. They will have more awareness of the latest scientific fact-based information and reports on climate change at the international and national levels.
