1.Introductory lecture on the basics in stream-ecology (river hydro-morphology, abiotic factors, biotic communities of riverine landscapes), impacts of anthropogenic interventions (river regulation, hydropower usage etc.), examples of river restoration and ecological monitoring, relevant legal frameworks, in total 8 units (a 2h)
2.Field excursion (2 days) divided into four major topics/stations each 0.5 day
a.Limnology: visit of different waterbodies along the Danube/Danube Island in Vienna; focus on different trophic situations, algae, macrophytes, plankton and ecosystem functions.
b.River management: Visit of the hydropower-plant Freudenau as well as the related fish-pass. Focus on technical solutions in the context of sustainable river management.
c.Benthic invertebrates: The lecturer and tutors will demonstrate sampling of different stream habitats at a section of the Marchfelkanal in Vienna. Different groups of benthic invertebrates will be shown. The major sampling strategies and field methods in the context of legal requirements will be discussed.
d.Fish ecology: Demonstration of different fish-sampling methods (boat- and wading electrofishing, net-fishing etc.) at the Marchfeldkanal in Vienna, demonstrating the sampled fish species and discussing their relevance for fish ecological status assessment etc.

Based on the knowledge of physicochemical and abiotic processes imparted in the introductory lecture, students will learn to understand ecological relationships in modified river systems. The visited stations during the excursion part will provide a basis for being able to address basic practical questions especially in aquatic ecology, monitoring, ecosystem management and restoration ecology.
