Lehrinhalt

The course starts with an overview on river-system interactions and an introduction to main scientific approaches.
After, four major topics will be addressed:
* river-society interactions on a long-term perspective;
* the societal and ecological functions of rivers based e.g. on the ecosystem services concept;
* participatory approaches in river management, conservation, etc.
* perception of rivers, knowledge, education

Lehrziel

After successful completion of this course, participants are able to:
- Describe main characteristics of relations between rivers and societies (e.g. trade-offs, synergies, …) and their change in time
- Explain and apply 2-3 concepts of river–society interaction on a concrete example (e.g. Ecosystem Services, socio-ecological system-approaches)
- Describe the nature and relevance of human perception on river-society interactions
- Reproduce and explain methodological approaches based on concrete case studies presented and discussed during the course
- Discuss the most important current developments in research of river-society interactions based on scientific papers, which are presented and discussed during the course
