Nanotechnology enables a broad variety of applications, products and processes (e.g., nanocarriers in cosmetics, quantum dots in display technologies, or nanoparticles for medical teranostics).
In this course, we will address a wide range of topics concerned with nanomaterials including their technological and biomedical potential, as well as possible impacts on human health and the environment.
•Introduction to nanomaterials: Definitions (natural versus man-made, engineered nanomaterials (ENMs); Differences of nanomaterials vs bulk materials; Nanomaterials used today; Overview about characterisation techniques for their unique physical-chemical properties
•Selected studies on the nano-scale: Methods and technologies for characterisation of ENMs; Synthesis and functionalisation of ENMs
•Risk assessment of ENMs: Nanotoxicity; Hazard and exposure assessment according to chemicals legislation (REACH, CLP, etc.); nano-specific risk assessment concepts
