The elective course „ Biology of aging“ with seminar character for the Mater studies of Biotechnology (H418) and Food Science and Technology (H417) is allocated within biotechnology, food sciences and cell- and molecular biology.
In 8 connected modules the students are going to learn about the principles of biological aging, different aging theories, the hallmarks of aging, the influence of stress and environmental factors on the aging processes, as well as the influence of aging on fertility and tumorigenesis, evolutionary aspects, different examples of aging processes in animals and cellular processes of aging.
Detailed course content:
1. What is aging?
2. Aging theories
3. Oxidative stress and calorie restriction
4. Aging and fertility
5. Evolutionary aspects
6. Examples of aging processes:
6.1. Aging of yeast
6.2. Aging of worms: C. elegans
6.3. Aging of flies: D. melanogaster
6.4. Rodents
6.5. The cell culture model of replicative senescence
7. The hallmarks of aging
8. Premature aging syndromes
9. Tumorigenesis and aging
- Inhaltliche Voraussetzungen (erwartete Kenntnisse)
-
Basic knowledge of cell- and molecular biology is highly recommended!
- Lehrziel
-
After successful completion of this elective course, students understand the most important concepts and molecular processes of aging in different organisms (yeast, worms, flies, higher animals and humans). They know current interdisciplinary strategies to target the aging process and critically evaluate emerging strategies to increase the life quality of aged persons.
