IMPORTANT
Please only register if you already meet one of the requirements at the time of registration.
A prerequisite is a degree, including a registered grade, in at least one of the courses:
790351, 790318, or 790367.
ALSO IMPORTANT: As of 2024/25 this course will only be offered once a year - we aim to have this course in November, with a back up for the SS only if needed.
NEW AND IMPORTANT; due to many, many, many last minute cancellations, which made it impossible for people on the waiting list to join on such short notice and which, in the worst case, endangered the class for the two remaining students (OUT OF EIGHT REGISTERED) as there is a minimal class size required to hold a course.
For this reason, as of now, participation can be cancelled only until 4 weeks before the start of the course, after that only in exceptional and documented cases, such as illness. If you cancel your participation after that date without a good reason, you will be put at the end of the registration/waiting list in the next course and only be able to participate if there are enough spots available.

The course agenda
The course lasts eight days and comprises 3 ECTS credits.
In the first part of the course, you will learn
- basic culturing techniques of cell lines used for the production of recombinant proteins
- how to transfect plasmid DNA into mammalian cells
- how to apply genome engineering methods like the CRISPR-Cas9 system
- Detection, characterization and analysis of gene knock-outs on the cells' phenotype by flow cytometry and genotyping
In the second part of the course, you will dive into the production of recombinant proteins. You will learn how to set up and program a bioreactor yourself:
- Sterile connection of the periphery
- Medium preparation and inoculation of the bioreactor with recombinant CHO cells
- Daily sampling to determine cell concentration, viability, recombinant protein concentration, nutrient and metabolite concentrations
- Adjustment of relevant culture parameters, e.g., pH, DO.
- Documentation, data analysis, and interpretation
- Inhaltliche Voraussetzungen (erwartete Kenntnisse)
-
For Master Biotechnology or PhD students, while undergraduate students are not accepted.
Furthermore, one of the following examinations must already have been successfully completed:
Cell Factories (791351) or Cell Culture (791318) or Stem Cells and Tissue Engineering (791367)
- Lehrziel
-
You will gain a realistic understanding of cell culture technology and the handling and operation of a bioreactor for recombinant protein production. Simple work with established cell lines and critical steps will familiarize you with experimental planning, evaluation, and documentation. At the end of the course, you will present and discuss the results in front of an audience.
