Lehrinhalt

Organic farming in eastern Austria (Lower Austria) is constrained by the lack of livestock and rain in early spring and summer. Processes in this dry area are based on balanced crop management through crop rotation and soil preparation to prevent crop losses due to nutrient depletion, drought, plant pathogens and weed pressure. In addition, increasing humus levels to stabilise soil aggregates for plant nutrition and sufficient soil water content are essential. Therefore, biodiversity is needed by using cover crops and crop rotation.
During the summer term, students will collect data and compare different aspects of organic farming such as field management and soil fauna.
The aim of this course is to evaluate different farming systems using interdisciplinary approaches.
