Manifold progress has been made in climate science over the last decades, leading to substantial advancements in our understanding of key processes in the climate system and individual forcings and feedback mechanisms. Despite all progress, challenging areas remain. The most pressing ones are addressed by the World Climate Research Program Grand Challenges to advance climate science and its applicability to society. The current Grand Challenges include: 1) melting ice and global consequences, 2) clouds, circulation and climate sensitivity, 3) carbon feedbacks in the climate system, 4) weather and climate extremes, 5) water for the food baskets of the world, 6) regional sea-level change and coastal impacts, 7) near-term climate prediction.

After participation students will have gained an overview about the grand challenges in climate research and their respective importance. Each term one or two specific grand challenges will be selected which will then be covered in-depth in class. Thereby students will learn about the frontiers of the field and deepen their understanding in key areas of research in modern climate science. Students will get an overview about the most recent literature addressing individual grand challenges and be able to identify remaining knowledge gaps and fields of progress. Students will be able to better interpret future projections and lead an informed discussion about the advancements as well as open hot questions in modern climate research.
