Lehrinhalt

The course will be held in Vienna. It is recommended to attend this course together with the course Benthic Invertebrate Status Assessment (812358), which will be held directly afterwards.
Contents: overview on macro-invertebrate sampling and sorting techniques with special emphasis on Austrian methodologies, short repetition of taxonomic identification of benthic invertebrates. Practical work: sampling benthic invertebrates in wadeable rivers, transport, sorting and storage of samples, identification; overview on WFD-compliant ecological assessment with benthic invertebrates in rivers (assessment will be continued in the lecture 812358); report writing (technical report).

Inhaltliche Voraussetzungen (erwartete Kenntnisse)

Hydrobiologie I und Allgemeine Hydrobiologie Übungen (in German or English).

Recommended: 812343 Ecology of benthic invertebrates, 812384 Biomonitoring and -assessment, general Hydrobiology like 812103, 812105, 812101 or 812109

Lehrziel

Discuss various methods of sampling macro- invertebrates and their application in applied research and monitoring.
Identify ecologically meaningful habitat types (choriotopes) and estimate their proportional occurrence in the field.
Apply standardised sampling methods (“Multi-Habitat-Sampling”) in wadeable rivers.
Examine benthic invertebrate communities according to the European Water Framework Directive (sorting and identification of invertebrates).
Interpret and present research results in written form (technical report).
