Lehrinhalt

Global agriculture is striving to satisfy the global food demand, and provide healthy and nutritious produce, dairy and meat products. This task is becoming increasingly more challenging as climate warming is causing direct and indirect crop yield failures, crop damages, declining yields, increasing yield variability and thus leads to increased food insecurity. These challenges imply a strong need to apply suitable agrometeorological methods in order to reduce such climate-induced risks for agriculture worldwide. To meet this challenge this course will explain in a structured and detailed manner important agrometeorological methods applied to mitigate various weather risks for agricultural crops and animals, which are: over/undersupply of water, heavy precipitation and hail; too high or too low temperatures; wind effects, soil water and wind erosion; unsuitable soil temperatures; low radiation; inadequate microclimate in crop canopies or stables for animals; effects on biogenic damage factors (pests and diseases) and more. The course will provide insight in state-of-the-art techniques applied (except for details on irrigation techniques, where several other lectures are
already available at BOKU) adapted to various agro-ecosystems in low- and high-input agricultural systems. Finally, students attending will receive training to apply specific methods/techniques (oriented on their interest) such as planning frost protection or optimizing crop water use efficiency by a combination of measures, pest and disease risk assessment or others by applying various methods ranging from simple calculation procedures to detailed, and specific simulation models. Finally, this class will foster cooperative learning as students will work in teams on problems and present their results in a team presentation.

Inhaltliche Voraussetzungen (erwartete Kenntnisse)

A basic lecture in meteorology or agrometeorology is recommended.

Lehrziel

Students attending will have obtained upon course completion:
- a detailed understanding of common methods in practical agrometeorology, applied under various agro-ecosystems over the world
-a detailed technical understanding for - and practical skills in - specific agrometeorological methods or techniques
-the ability to explain, select and recommend up-to-date and suitable agrometeorological methods in order to avoid crop and animal damages caused by climate change and variability
