Lehrinhalt

This course will cover the major bio-physical and socio-economic factors determining crop production and natural resource use in the tropics and subtropics. Following an introduction into climate, vegetation, and soils, the key crops grown in the subtropical and tropical regions will be presented with detailed information on their eco-physiological and agronomical requirements. The course will also address the technical, environmental, and economic aspects of irrigated cropping systems in the subtropics and the tropical agroforestry systems. Assessing the dynamics of water, carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus and their implications for the productivity and sustainability of tropical and subtropical agro-ecosystems is another component of this course.

Lehrziel

After successful completion of the course on “Plant Production in the Tropics & Subtropics”, the students will:
•describe the bio-physical and socio-economic production environments in the tropical and subtropical agro-ecosystems;
•explain the eco-physiological and agronomic requirements of major tropical and subtropical crops;
•identify the key species of parasitic weeds as biotic constraints to crop production in the tropics;
•describe the key characteristics of irrigated cropping systems and irrigation methods;
•perform interdisciplinary analyses of agriculturally relevant issues such as sustainability, food security, and natural resource use efficiency;
•apply quantitative methods for assessing the impact of production factors, such as climate, soil, and management, on the productivity and sustainability of agro-ecosystems.
