• 1st half: Introduction to optical methods in cell biology (three 3-hour lectures)
Lecture 1: Visualising cells
Lecture 2: Following protein dynamics in living cells
Lecture 3: Measuring physiological processes in living cells
• 2nd half: Work with various optical methods (5 hours): The practical part will give you hands-on experience in the following systems:
Inverted research microscope (Zeiss Axio Observer) equipped with:
*epifluorescence
*bright field
*polarization microscopy
*phase contrast
*differential interference contrast
Confocal microscope (Leica SP8)
Stimulated emission depletion (STED) super-resolution microscope (Leica SP8-gSTED)

•You have acquired an understanding of the basic concepts behind the most important optical methods in cell biology.
•You have used a significant selection of optical cell biological tools that are currently available at the DAGZ and the BOKU Core Facility Multiscale Imaging.
•You have shown the capability to process, mount, and describe microscopic figures as required for thesis and/or journal publication.
