The Research Design lecture consists of a lecture part (20% Prof. Wimmer) and a seminar part (80% Dr. Müller)
The lecture starts with an introduction to scientific theory (two lecture units Prof. Wimmer). Learning objective: Basic understanding of the theory of science.
As part of the seminar (Dr. Müller), the application of suitable scientific and statistical methods will be practiced and deepened using a practical example as part of group work.

At the beginning of the semester, Dr. Müller will explain the basic statistical methods that are used in the majority (over 90%) of scientific practice. This part includes basic research design considerations, formulation of a technical or scientific question, formulation of hypotheses, statistical tests (T-test, ANOVA, etc.) and regressions. A basic understanding of the application of the statistical methods is essential. What is being compared? What statements can be made about statistical tests performed? What does my statistical result mean? What conclusions can I draw? The various methods are explained using examples that are as practical as possible.
The remaining part of the seminar involves group work. As part of the group work (max. 5 students per group), a scientific project is developed and the methods presented are applied.
