Lehrinhalt

Organic agriculture in eastern Austria (Lower Austria) is constrained by the lack of animal husbandry and the lack of rain in early spring and summer. Processes in this dry area are based on balanced crop management through crop rotation and soil tillage to prevent crop losses due to nutrient depletion, drought, plant pathogens and weed pressure. It is also essential to stabilise soil aggregates for plant nutrition and sufficient soil water content. Therefore, biodiversity is needed by seeding cover crops and reduced soil tillage.
During the winter term we will look at basic organic farming practices such as soil tillage systems and cover cropping on water conservation, plant nutrition, soil structure and soil biology.

Students will do some practical data sampling at the BOKU Research farm and use different methods to evaluate soil health.

Inhaltliche Voraussetzungen (erwartete Kenntnisse)

Basics in plant productions conventional or organic farming, soil management, plant nutrition and the ability for a critical discussion with present research (peer reviewed research papers).

Lehrziel

Interdisciplinary knowledge of organic farming in terms of plant production and capability to connect textbook knowledge with practical crop management.
