Lehrinhalt

The lecture provides an overview on the objectives of sanitary engineering and water pollution control. Although the content can be divided into two main parts (Water Supply issues and the Wastewater Treatment) a clear understanding of cross connections is an important focus.
The theoretical background is supported by case studies and photographs (virtual excursions). Besides the consideration of the Austrian situation and conventional solutions all issues are discussed in an (central) European context and are compared to different situations or alternative solutions e.g. with regard to developing countries.

Lehrziel

*) Understanding of the technical and managerial basics of water supply services, wastewater discharge, and wastewater treatment
*) Knowledge of the cycle (and interconnections) of water use from the water resources for water supply towards the discharge of treated wastewater (cradle to cradle)
*) Knowing the most important legal acts and an overview on their content with regard to water supply and wastewater treatment
*) Understanding of the most important conventional and advanced water treatment techniques for water supply and waste water treatment
*) Ability to describe the interconnections between different water resources, the expectable water quality and the related treatment requirements
*) Knowledge on / ability to outline and describe the function of the major parts of water supply and wastewater discharge / treatment infrastructure
*) Basic / theoretical knowledge on planning, design and management of water supply and wastewater discharge / treatment infrastructure; sustainable operation (monitoring, controlling, management); knowledge on decision support / management systems for water infrastructure (e.g. performance indicators)
*) Basic knowledge on alternative concepts and solutions in the international context
