Description of various viral replication strategies as well as host-virus interactions; theory and practical applications of viral systems for recombinant protein expression, gene delivery and vaccine production; described examples will include various insect, mammalian and plant viruses.
Students will get hands-on training on routine insect cell culturing, the infection of insect cells/plants with the respective viral pathogens for the expression of recombinant proteins, different virus titration assays, detection of plant pathogens using ELISA.

Students will gain an understanding of viral strategies, their principal life cycles, and the ability to choose a suitable viral system for protein expression and gene delivery applications.
After completion of this course students can outline virological methods in the fields of insect cell culture as well as in plant virology. They will be are able to infect insect cells for recombinant protein expression, perform virus titrations for the determination of the infectious virus concentration and carry out hemagglutination assays to determine infuenza HA activity.
Students will be able to mechanicalyl inoculate leaves for recombinant protein expression in plants and perform ELISA tests for the detection of plant pathogens.
