Conservation planning in Southern Africa: whose conservation is it anyway?
The seminar focuses on the dynamics of conservation in Southern Africa, how conservation started as fortress conservation to the recent community-based conservation and emerging discourses. The course looks at the relationship between conservation officials and the community’s and their divergent or convergent views. A focus of the course is on the benefits and costs of conservation for both communities and park officials. The course also dwells on the link or disconnect between global conservation goals and lived realities of communities who live next to national parks in Southern Africa. Thus, the course focuses on how to reconcile conservation planning given the wicked nature of competing conservation interests and other challenges such as climate change and sustainable livelihoods. The course will begin in November 2024 with an online introduction, then first week of December 2024 with contact sessions, an online session in January 2025 and submission of the seminar paper, presentation and poster. The course will focus on the Greater Limpopo Transfontier Area, Kavango–Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area and parks in lower Zambezi (Zambia (Lower Zambezi) and Zimbabwe(Mana Pools). Reading materials on these parks will be issued and will form the basis of the discussion and course.
