Lehrinhalt

This course covers the following topics:

- Diversity of microorganisms
- Fundamentals of metabolic conversion processes
- Bioavailability and uptake of soluble and insoluble substrates
- Metabolic energy metabolism and balance of the cell
- Biofilms and microbially induced corrosion
- Formation of flocs and cell aggregates
- Behavior of mixed cultures and quorum sensing
- Degradation of xenobiotics
- Sustainable environmental biotechnologies
- Microbiology of key environmental processes: aerobic/anaerobic treatment, biogas production, drinking water treatment, composting

Inhaltliche Voraussetzungen (erwartete Kenntnisse)

Knowledege at bachelor-level in biochemistry, genetics and microbiology.

Lehrziel

Upon successful completion of this course, students will have a comprehensive understanding of core environmental biotechnological processes, including biogas production, drinking water treatment, aerobic and anaerobic treatment, and composting. They will be familiar with the diversity of microorganisms and the dynamics of mixed cultures, and understand how microbial behavior and metabolic activities (e.g., biofilm formation, corrosion, floc formation) influence biotechnological processes. Students will be able to analyze and evaluate existing sustainable technologies and design new approaches based on fundamental interdisciplinary knowledge.
