The course introduces biophysical concepts to analyze society-nature interactions and human impact on the climate system along five methods and approaches, i.e., material flow analysis, human appropriation of NPP, full carbon accounting, time use analysis and circular economy modelling. Students will read scientific literature on concepts and empirical case studies, they will discuss empirical results and will critically reflect the potentials and limitations of different indicators and accounting frameworks.

After successful completion of the course, students have deepened their understanding of systemic biophysical concepts to analyze society-nature interactions and human impacts on the climate system. They acquired knowledge in socio-ecological methods and indicator calculation and interpretation, and critically reflected potentials and limitations of different accounting frameworks.
