Re-Envisioning Vulnerable Landscape: Integrating Strategies To Increase Territorial Resilience

Course registration opens at 19 Jan 2026

The courses Excursion to Landscape Planning II (LAWI301508) and Landscape Planning in the Country (LAWI301497; a simplified and not entirely accurate English title for Landschaftsplanerische Beiträge zur Kulturlandschaftsentwicklung) are offered as a combined module.

Attendance in both courses is compulsory. All sessions are held in English.

Attendance is compulsory for the entire duration of the excursion week in Italy. The module F_LAND26 aims to explore innovative frameworks and integrated strategies that foster territorial resilience through transformative and nature-based approaches. Participants will engage in a multidisciplinary dialogue combining spatial planning, landscape architecture, environmental science, and social innovation.
The programme, based on theoretical and practical activities, lectures, seminars, field visits and workgroups, will provide to the participants an innovating, interdisciplinary working methodology, both large-scale environmental and socio-economic issues.

The module consists of four learning phases:

(i) Theoretical prep Work (March-May)
(ii) Blended Phase (June 22–26, 2026, 9:30–12:30, online)
(iii) Excursion to / Fieldwork in Italy (July 20–25, 2026 Location: Pieve Tesino – CSALP Headquarters (Italy)
(iv) Writing Seminar Paper (submission latest in September 2026)

The theoretical phase consists of reading and discussing scientific articles on the four thematic blocks. The blended learning phase will provide input and online-seminar work on social, environmental, and cultural heritage vulnerabilities of fragile territories.
The on-site activities at CSALP – Pieve Tesino (TN) will foster collaborative learning and hands-on experimentation, promoting cross-cultural exchange among students, researchers, and professionals. Together, participants will co-create design visions and strategies that support sustainable transitions within these vulnerable landscapes.
After the on-site activity, individual seminar papers will complete the learning experience and result in 2 course certificates.

To prepare participants to develop impactful projects tackling the transformational challenges of marginal and fragile areas, the program includes four thematic teaching units.:

• Reading multidimensional vulnerability ( land degradation, tourism, depopulation);
• Nature-Based Solutions and adaptive infrastructures (designing with ecological processes);
• Cultural heritage and landscape identity ( erosion of local tradition and cultural landscape);
• Transition Governance ( living lab, bottom-up approaches, stakeholders' involvement)

The course is held within the Framework of Erasmus+ BIP Programs. Thus, you must meet the following conditions to be eligible for participation (see further down).

Please read and be aware that there are certain rules for participation! (see section "additional information" and participation requirements)
