Lehrinhalt

Nanobiotechnology merges nanotechnology and biotechnology, manipulating matter at the nanoscale (1-100 nm) to develop materials and devices for biological applications.
This course introduces nanobiotechnology, including its concepts, scope, applications, and prospects. Examples of current applications are given including:
•Lipid nanotechnology for creating smart targeting and delivery systems, diagnostics tools, nanocontainers,
•Protein nanotechnology for the fabrication of, e.g., ultrafiltration membranes, molecular pinboards, functional lipid membranes, and membrane-protein-based biosensors
•Biomimetic lessons showcasing the potential on nanobiotechnological applications
Overall, the course outlines how nanobiotechnology interfaces biology and nanoscale engineering. Issues that will be treated are both current research work and emerging methodologies from the scientific literature.

Inhaltliche Voraussetzungen (erwartete Kenntnisse)

Basic knowledge in Biochemistry and Biophysics.

Lehrziel

After completing this course, the students can:
•describe state-of-the-art theories, principles and methods which are important for molecular nanotechnology
•understand and explain how supramolecular structures like, e.g., artificial membranes and sophisticated biosensors are generated and how their working principle is
•assess acquired skills for critical analysis and evaluation of compiled and published scientific data and its presentation
•compare and analyze different ways of thinking in molecular nanobiotechnology
•validate and predict the characteristics of nanobiotechnological architecture
•discuss and generate knowledge on natural and artificial but bio-inspired systems to assemble functional supramolecular structures
