Lehrinhalt

Catherine Szanto
is associate researcher of École Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture de Paris-La Villette, France

Landscape architecture never designs on a white page : there is always a (designed) space that is already there, with its own richness and complexity, created by the intertwinning of human intention, neglect, and natural dynamics. Observing and learning from what is already there before starting to design is an important part of landscape architectural know-how.
The aim of the course is twofold : students will first develop their capacity to observe space by developing their awareness of their own perceptual processes ; they will then use their new awareness and their understanding of plant dynamics to propose a design with a focus on spatial quality rather than objects. The experimental design approach explored in this course is inspired by research on experiental notation systems (experiential score) and by the Landscape Laboratory in Alnarp (Sweden) (see readings below).
The design site is the Koglberg in St. Margarethen im Burgenland, a unique natural protected area where geology, wilderness and cultural artefacts coexist. Part of the hill is a still functioning stone quarry, part of it is a site for open-air opera production. From 1959 to 1986, international sculptors’ encounters were organised on the site ; the invited artists created on-site sculptures made from the quarry stone. After several decade of neglect, the hill is now a nature-protected area, with a distinct flora and fauna.
Today, the hill is managed by the Esterhazy NOW Foundation, which regards it as a global landart project (Land-Art-Gesamtkunstwerk) (https://www.esterhazy-now.at/wege-gehen/kogelberg-st-margarethen) . The students’ projects will propose a landscape architectural approach to the Foundation’s vision for the site.
