Lehrinhalt

This course will present a range of typical problems in bioinformatics
and introduces the underlying algorithmic techniques for solving them.
Basic concepts of computer science will be presented (e.g. recursion,
search strategies, trees, alignments), combined with their application
to biological questions. Furthermore, the algorithms are illustrated and
analyzed regarding their complexity (runtime and space requirements).
Knowing the complexity of an algorithm is of great importance when
processing (usually great quantities of) real world data, since
computational resources are usually limited.

Basic knowledge in mathematics and programming
Lehrziel

Ability to understand the basis of methods and tools in bioinformatics.
This is crucial to be able to apply the most fitting method to a certain
problem, to estimate runtime and required disk space, as well as to be
able to interpret results of these tools appropriately.
