The course includes the analysis of biotechnological processes with different product groups and hosts. It includes the introduction of basic process parameters and key performance indicators and respective calculations. In more detail, the following topics will be addressed:
•Analysis and evaluation of basic process parameters such as biomass and product yields, titers, specific and volumetric substrate consumption rates, metabolite production rates, product formation rates, productivities, specific biomass growth rates.
•Introduction to fundamental process optimization and quantitative methods for process evaluation, such as data visualization and presentation and comparison of experimental conditions with statistical models.
•Analysis of key performance indicators and comparison of bioprocesses for different product classes with respective to the key performance indicators and process parameters.
- Inhaltliche Voraussetzungen (erwartete Kenntnisse)
-
Basic knowledge on enzyme kinetics, bioprocess parameters, bioreactor operation modes and descriptive statistics is expected. It is not required but having taken “Fundamentals of Bioprocess Engineering (790123)” is recommended.

After completing the course, students will be able to:
•Name the common key performance indicators for bioprocesses in the dimensions of process, sustainability, and economic viability, distinguish them from one another, and relate them to each other.
•Assess the significance of different key performance indicators for various bioprocesses and analyze based on the profitability and sustainability with statistical foundation.
•Analyze processes for different product classes and compare them according to criteria of different process parameters e.g. titer, substrate conversion, volumetric productivity, yield etc.
•Analyze the economic viability of bioprocesses, list and compare commonly used process modeling software, and identify process steps with the greatest impact on profitability.
•Use basic mathematical, statistical and optimization methods to assess experimental and economical aspects of a process.
