Lehrinhalt

Selected bacteria, biofilm diseases and viruses are highlighted in the context of infectious diseases. Microbial diseases are presented according to the human body. The following issues are presented for each disease: disease’s cause, portal of entry, symptoms, incubation period, transmission, and susceptible populations. A focus is also on the immunology of host-microbe interactions as well as treatment, therapies, and prevention of microbial infectious diseases.

Inhaltliche Voraussetzungen (erwartete Kenntnisse)

Basic knowledge in microbiology

Lehrziel

After successful completion of this lecture, students have gained insight into the mechanisms of selected microbial diseases as a basis for the design of anti-infective therapies.

Students are able
… to assess the infectious potential arising from fungi, bacteria, and viruses
… to define the structure-function relationships governing pathogenicity
… to identify health risks arising from fungi, bacteria, and viruses in different
… to apply their knowledge in the way of looking at scientific challenges in the design of anti-infective therapies

Students have acquired theoretical competence in detection and analysis of infectious organisms.
