Lehrinhalt

The course builds on existing knowledge of wood-based composites and focuses on selected industrial processes and current developments in wood- and fiber-based materials. Topics include particleboards, OSB, low-density boards, dry- and wet-process fiberboards, scrimber production, macrofiber concepts, and examples of bamboo scrimber.

Further emphasis is placed on underutilized wood assortments, alternative and waste-based feedstocks, and material suitability. A research-to-market case study, focused on densified and delignified wood composites as well as commercial examples, is used to critically discuss scale-up, product development, and market relevance.

Problem-based learning is integrated through a group exercise on establishing a new adhesive system for wood-based composites, finishing off in short student presentations.

Inhaltliche Voraussetzungen (erwartete Kenntnisse)

Basic familiarity with wood-based materials, wood anatomy, wood chemistry, and common industrial production processes for particleboards, fiberboards, and related composites is helpful, but not mandatory. Relevant fundamentals will be briefly recapped where needed.

Lehrziel

After completing the course, students will be able to describe and compare selected industrial processes for particleboards, OSB, fiberboards, scrimber, and related wood- and fiber-based materials. They will be able to assess the suitability of alternative raw materials and feedstocks, explain key process and bonding challenges, and critically evaluate the industrial potential of new material concepts and adhesive systems.
