Lehrinhalt

The lecture provides an overview on the objectives of sanitary engineering and water pollution control. Although the content can be divided into two main parts (Water Supply issues and the Wastewater Treatment) a clear understanding of cross connections is an important focus.
The theoretical background is supported by case studies and photographs (virtual excursions). Besides the consideration of the Austrian situation and conventional solutions all issues are discussed in an (central) European context and are compared to different situations or alternative solutions e.g. with regard to developing countries.

Lehrziel

Explain the technical and managerial fundamentals of water supply, wastewater collection, and wastewater treatment.
Describe the urban water cycle, from the abstraction of water resources through supply, use, and wastewater collection and treatment to discharge or reuse, and explain how these stages affect one another.
Name the most important legal acts governing water supply and wastewater treatment and summarise their key requirements.
Explain the principles, fields of application, and limitations of the most important conventional and advanced treatment processes for drinking water and wastewater.
Relate different water resources (e.g. groundwater, spring water, surface water) to their typical water quality and derive the resulting treatment requirements.
Identify the main components of water supply and wastewater infrastructure (e.g. abstraction, storage, distribution networks, sewer systems, treatment plants) and describe their functions.
Outline the basic principles of planning and designing water supply and wastewater infrastructure.
Describe the elements of sustainable infrastructure operation, including monitoring, process control, and asset management.
Explain how decision support and management tools, such as performance indicators, are used to evaluate and manage water infrastructure.
Compare alternative concepts and solutions used internationally (e.g. decentralised systems, source separation, water reuse) and discuss their applicability in different contexts.
