WithinWithin the scope of this lecture a small project is conducted.
Following work steps will be followed:
1) Choice of the overall topic
2) Literature study
3) Definition of the research question
4) Conducting the investigations
5) Analysis of the results and conclusions
The final deliverable is a 20 page (including figures and tables) report.
Students can propose their own topics.
Examples of possible topics
1) THE INFLUENCE OF CLOUD COVER ON NOCTURNAL COOLING AND ITS SIGNIFICANCE FOR AGRICULTURE IN THE GREATER VIENNA AREA
The methodology is based on a combination of data analysis and field experiments. The data basis consists of hourly temperature and cloud cover data—collected via Geosphere Austria’s ceilometer measurements—as well as data on longwave radiation. Additionally, field experiments are conducted to measure soil temperature and the radiation balance under varying cloud cover conditions. The expected outcomes include quantifying the impact of cloud cover on nocturnal cooling in the greater Vienna area and deriving practical recommendations for farmers.
2) MICRO CLIMATIC INVESTIGATIONS IN A PLANT CANOPY
Climate, and meteorological parameters such as air temperature, precipitation and air humidity are well known factors which influence plant growth.
Within the present project the student learns to conduct continuous meteorological measurements. A micro meteorological station will be installed at a selected location.
With the help of the teacher the student will be in charge of the installation of the station of supervising the measurements, reading out the data and analysing the data.
3) INVESTIGATION OF LIGHT POLLUTION IN THE GREATER VIENNA AREA
The aim is to investigate light intensity/polltution in the greater Vienna area using continuous light measurements and additional routine measurements.
The influence of lunar phase, cloud cover, and aerosol concentration is to be examined through continuous measurements and modeled using a simple mathematical approach.
4) INFLUENCE OF CLIMATE ON PLANT GROWTH: SIMULATION WITH A PLANT GROWTH MODEL (collaboration with Prof. Eitzinger)
The student needs first to understand the influence of climate on plant growth and status. Second the student will learn to perform simulation with a plant growth model. Third simulations will be performed with real climatic or meteorological data.
5) INFLUENCE OF CLOUD COVER ON THE MAGNITUDE OF NOCTURNAL COOLING IN THE CITY
Data (e.g., ceilometer data) and additional in-house measurements are used to determine the influence of individual meteorological variables—such as cloud cover, synoptic weather conditions, and wind speed and direction—on the magnitude of nocturnal cooling. The aim is, among other things, to analyze in greater detail the conditions that lead to extreme weather events (such as tropical nights).
