W. AUFHAMMER and K.-G. FEDEROLF:

Improvement in frosttolerance of hard wheat (Triticum durum Desf.) by seed treatments with plant growth regulators

Summary

In pot-trials and factorial field-trials effects of seed-treatments with plant growth regulators (Triapenthenol, Paclobutrazol, Tetcyclasis, CCC and Kinetin) on frosttolerance characteristics of Tritium durum plants were investigated. As far as the pot-trials showed evaluable variation growth, regulator treatments, except Kinetin-treatment, resulted in lower frost damage scores and better plant survival rates as compared to untreated control plants. In the field trials seed-treatments with growth retardants lowered the depth at which the crown overwinters in the soil, because of reduced internode elongation. In interaction with the active ingredients and concentrations a reduced field emergence rate was the consequence. Physiological and applied aspects are discussed in combination with literature. Key words: durum-wheat, cold tolerance, seed-treatments.
