H. SCHWARZ:

Influence of medium and fertilization on growth of in vitro propagated Miscanthus sinensis "Gigenteus"

Summary

The aim of the trial at the Institute of Landscapeplants in Hornum/Denmark was to estimate the influence of medium, fertilizer and amount of fertilization on growth and development of in vitro propagated Miscanthus sinensis "Giqanteus". The Miscanthus sinensis "Giganteus" cuttings with the mixture of 80 % sphagnum and 20 % rockwool had the best growth compared with the other mediums. In Sphagnum and rockwool, the plants had the longest roots, the best shootlength, but also the highest number of shoots. The following order of suitable mediums was found: Sphagnum with roekwool > Sphagnum with sand Sphagnum pure Referring to fertilizing 4 kg/m3 Osmocote land 4 kg/m3 Osmocote II can be recommended. The variation 2 kg/m3 Osmocote II is less suitable because of a shorter shootlength and a lower number of shoots about 25 cm. 6 and 8 kg/m3 Osmoeote II are more or less equal with the two 4 kg/m3 variants. In liquid Hornummixture the plants grew less well than in granulated Osmocote. Following order of suitable fertilizers was found: 4 kg/m3 Osmocote I = 4 kg/m3 Osmoeote II > 6 and 8 kg/m3 Osmocote II > 2 kg/m3 Osmocote II > 0.1% Hornumblending In July these Miscanthus sinensis "Giganteus"-plants were transplanted to the field. One part of this field was fertilized with 70 kg/ha nitrogen. To the other part no nitrogen was given. In the number of shoots and grades, which give information about the habitus of the plants, no significant difference between nitrogen fertilized and nitrogen unfertilized plots was found. The duration of growth was about ten weeks. After these ten weeks the growth differences determined for each medium and fertilizer treatment after the greenhouse trial became bigger. Key words: Miscanthus sinensis "Giqanteus", medium, fertilizing, in vitro propagated plants.
