As universities become increasingly international and diverse, intercultural competence has become a key professional skill for staff.
BOKU employees who have demonstrated a strong commitment to intercultural engagement—such as participating in international staff mobility, hosting international guests, contributing to international projects or engaging in international and intercultural activities - can apply for the International Certificate offered by BOKU International Relations.
This award recognises and highlights intercultural competence, strengthens participants' professional profile, and demonstrates their commitment to internationalisation and inclusive collaboration.
Competences & Criteria

Competency Area 1 Language Proficiency Employees improve the foreign language skills they need to work in an international environment. Elective Modules (at least 1 module):
English, German, or other languages: at least B1/B2 level for German and English, or A2/B1 for other languages, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. |

Competency Area 2 Intercultural Competence Required module:

Area of Expertise 3 Internationalisation at BOKU Elective Modules (min. 2 modules):

Area of Expertise 4 International Mobility BOKU staff members expand their professional expertise in another country or through hosting international guests, gaining a new perspective on their field. Furthermore, as Ambassadors for Internationalisation, they contribute to the dissemination of international and intercultural experiences. Required Module (to be completed after the elective module):

Required documentation
To apply for this award, please combine all supporting documents (see the ‘Areas of Competence & Criteria’ table above for required and elective modules and their respective proof) into a single PDF and email it to international(at)boku.ac.at.
BOKU International Relations will verify that the criteria of all four areas of competence have been met and issue the award certificate.
Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis.
