As a first step to start your studies at BOKU, please follow the procedure described below. Plan your steps ahead of time, so that you can register for courses as early as possible.

You have to register yourself personally at BOKU study services at the beginning of your stay here. A prior online appointment is necessary (book "Termin Evidenz", booking 10-14 days in advance recommended).

Please go to the Study services immediately after your arrival.

1. Pre-Registration

Before you go to register at the Study services, you have to complete the  BOKUonline pre-registration
Please do not fill out the pre-registration before the registration period starts, otherwise it will count for the previous semester and will be deleted.
Students who attend a Bachelor full degree (no exchange students) have to pre-register within the registration period. Master and exchange students are able to pre-register later.

  • Upload a photo
  • Fill in your nationality, otherweise you will be asked for an Austrian social security number

2. Your appointment at the Study services (with prior online appointment booking)

Please bring the following documents with you to the Study services:

  • Your letter of admission („Bescheid über Zulassung zum Studium“) that was sent to your home address as soon as the application forms were complete and in order
  • A valid passport or identity card

At the Study services, you have to pay the student union fee of € 24,70 by bank card (Maestro, Visa, Master card, ...). If you do not have a cash card, you can ask you Buddy to go with you to the Study services and pay with his/her card. (If you pay online or with a payment form, you can only activate your BOKUonline account and register for courses approx. 5 days after having paid. Some courses might be booked out by then!)

IMPORTANT:
The student union fee is obligatory. Enrolment is only valid after payment. If you do not pay the student union fee, you can not register for courses and will not get any certificates.
Please be aware that also students doing an internship or working on their thesis have to pay the student union fee. Otherwise you will not get a confirmation of your stay!

3. Getting started

After enrolment, you will receive your BOKUcard (= student identity card). Furthermore, you will get an e-mail address and a user account for BOKUonline and the computer labs.

After your first login to BOKUOnline, you are asked to complete the UHSTAT1 questionnaire. For this, you need an "Ersatzkennzeichen" (Substitute Code) if you don't have an Austrian Social Security Number. You can find this "Ersatzkennzeichen/Substitute Code" in your "Studienblatt" (records of studies) that you can download in BOKUonline (-> enrolment documents, top right corner).

If you are staying in Vienna for the whole academic year, another payment notification will be sent to your BOKU e-mail address at the end of the winter semester. Then you have to pay the student union fee for the summer semester.

When you first register as a student in Austria, you will receive your personal registration number („Matrikelnummer“). This number will be yours for the rest of your academic career in Austria, even if you change universities. Every letter and report will carry this number.

The BOKU card is the official confirmation that you are attending BOKU and it must be given to you personally.

Confirmations of enrolment/continuation ("Inskriptionsbestätigung") can be printed via BOKUonline.
