Course registration
Registration for courses at BOKU is done via BOKUonline. You will receive your access data for activating your account when you enrol in person at BOKU Student Services.
Important notes:
- Course contents can also be viewed without registration, but registration for courses and examinations is only possible with an activated BOKU account.
- As part of the welcome days for international students, there is also a BOKUonline enrollment.
You must register for each individual course.
Please register as soon as possible after your arrival! Some courses may be fully booked quickly.
Course Schedule
Lectures do not require attendance, but other types of courses do. Find out about the different course types to plan your courses.
Courses take place either
- for the whole semester, usually 2 “hours” a week (= 2x45 minutes) or
- for shorter periods à ”blocked courses” (e.g. one or two weeks, several days in a row, …)
Check the "scheduled dates" for each course in the course description in BOKUonline. As soon as you have registered for courses, you can also view your individual timetable as a calendar view in BOKUonline.
It usually takes a few weeks at the beginning of the semester for the timetable to be ready. Don't panic, just enjoy the flexibility!
Tips for creating your timetable:
- Register for alternative/backup classes
- Consider the expected/required prior knowledge for each course (see course description in BOKUonline)
- Check the venues and consider the time for commuting between BOKU locations
- Be sure to attend the first course session (otherwise you may be deregistered)
- Deregister from courses that you do not take after all (during the registration period)
Exchange students can select from the entire course range at BOKU and can still change their Learning Agreement in the first 5 weeks after the start of the semester (information will be sent by email).
Full degree students have to stick to the regulations and course offer of their study programme curriculum!
Challenges with course registration
1. Overlaps
- no compulsory attendance, overlap only once or twice ⇒ Registration possible
- compulsory attendance, overlap during the whole semester ⇒ choose another course
2. The courses are already full and you are on the waiting list (relatively low number) ⇒ send an e-mail to the teacher (as an exchange student) and go to the first session (often some students do not show up and are deregistered)
3. The course registration is already closed ⇒ email the teacher
4. The course cannot be found in BOKUonline or the registration is not yet open ⇒ e-mail to the secretariat of the institute offering the course
5. A course is only open for a specific study program ⇒ email the teacher with a request for an exception for exchange students
Exams at BOKU
- No fixed exam period - exams usually take place in the last few weeks of the semester.
- You must register for exams (BOKUonline, check registration period).
- Some courses do not have exams but partial assessments (cooperation, written work, presentations,...) Information in BOKUonline and in the first course unit.
- Usually 3 examinations per course(3rd date often in the next semester).
- Make sure you know your exam dates by the middle of the semester in order to be able to plan your journey home.
- If you don’t attend an exam without cancelling it beforehand, you can be blocked for 3 months.
- An exam can be repeated a maximum of three times.
